Help Feed the Hungry in Israel
It
is regrettable – but there are people below the poverty level in
Israel and people who are hungry.
Table to Table, established in 2003, is a food rescue organization that collects high quality, excess food from catered events, corporate cafeterias, restaurants, factories, army bases and farms. The food is subsequently delivered to over 90 organizations serving Israelis in need. All the food that Table to Table collects would otherwise be discarded.
Table to Table is now seeking to recruit groups to participate in Project Leket, an innovative initiative to fight hunger in Israel. Through Project Leket, Table to Table and volunteer groups, with the support of farmers, pick fruit and vegetables that were not collected at the end of a particular season’s harvest. Typically volunteers pick fruit or vegetables for about 1-2 hours. There is no participation fee associated with Project Leket.
Table to Table distributes all the produce collected through Project
Leket to organizations serving individuals in need of food. All the fruit
and vegetables in fields participating in Project Leket that are not collected
by Table to Table will be wasted – left to rot.
The spirit of Project Leket is based on the following biblical precept:
When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the
field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be left for the alien,
the orphan, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all
your undertakings. Deuteronomy
24:19
Project
Leket volunteers salvage thousands of pounds of high quality fruit
and vegetables each year, helping to ensure that Israelis in need have accessibility
to nutritious food. Project Leket volunteers help ensure Israel maximizes
the use of its resources to fight hunger.
For Project Leket, every pair of hands can make a difference in the lives of hungry Israelis.
VFI will work with volunteers who are interested in helping Project Leket. They do need volunteers on Fridays to help gather food. We will work to see if we can integrate this option with the Sar-El work program, when possible.
